5.6.2023 | The responsibility for awarding government grants for sport science research will transfer from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture to the Academy of Finland. The amendment to Act on the Promotion of Sports and Physical Activity, which entered into force in February 2023, will simplify the application and review process by making it entirely the responsibility of a single organisation. To this end, the Academy of Finland will launch a new Academy Programme for sport science.

9.10.2023 | The Ministry of Education and Culture’s proportion of the 2024 budget proposal is EUR 8.0 billion, which is EUR 274 million more than in the 2023 Budget. The budget proposal implements the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government by raising the level of education and competence of the entire population. The measures in the budget proposal aim to strengthen the effectiveness of science and improve the conditions for conducting research and development.

13.3.2020 | The Matriculation Examination Board, together with the Ministry of Education and Culture, has decided to bring forward the tests in humanities and sciences originally planned for the third week of examinations of spring 2020, so that the tests in humanities and sciences will be held already in the second week of examinations, on Tuesday 17 March and Thursday 19 March.

19.4.2007 | Sari Sarkomaa (National Coalition Party), Master of Health Care, Member of Parliament, was appointed Minister of Education and Science and Stefan Wallin (Swedish People's Party), Master of Social Sciences, Member of Parliament, was appointed Minister of Culture and Sport in the newly elected government at the presidential session of the Government on Thursday. Mr Wallin will also be responsible for equality matters which belong to the remit of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

16.9.2020 | The Government will create conditions for growth in competence levels and employment by extending the duration of compulsory education, allocating funding for continuous learning and lowering fees for early childhood education and care. With the proceeds from gambling services diminishing, the funding for beneficiaries will be fully secured for 2021.

7.10.2019 | A budget of EUR 6.8 billion is proposed for the Ministry of Education and Culture’s administrative branch for 2020. The draft budget measures seek to increase the skills level in Finland, make education more equitable, improve the quality of education and enhance the wellbeing of children and young people. Financing for the arts and culture will support creative work and production and promote equal access to the arts and culture.

26.2.2021 | A study on the effects of diminished proceeds from gambling activities has been completed. The study examines four options for developing the Finnish gambling system. The working group sets as its primary option a comprehensive overhaul that would place gambling proceeds within the scope of universal coverage in central government revenue and existing beneficiaries would be under the spending limits procedure. The report was published on 26 February.

20.7.2021 | Minister of Science and Culture Antti Kurvinen will visit the Tokyo Summer Olympics on 23–27 July 2021. During his visit, Minister Kurvinen will attend the opening of the Olympic Games and show his support for Finland’s athletes. He will also meet with Japanese partners to discuss issues related to education, research and innovation.

12.5.2020 | The Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare have issued instructions that allow the return to early childhood education and contact teaching, taking care of safety and reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection. The latest instructions concern general upper secondary education, vocational education and training, universities, universities of applied sciences and liberal education.
