The Ministry of Education and Culture launches a competition to find a name for the H Figure - the figurehead of the Finnish Model for Leisure Activities. Every pupil or student in the Finnish primary and lower secondary education is invited to participate.

In the triennial survey, Finnish 15-year-olds ranked in third place among the OECD countries in scientific literacy. In 2003, when mathematics was previously the focus of study, Finland came in second place. The national average score in mathematics has decreased significantly since the 2003 assessment. Reading and science literacy have also deteriorated markedly.
