The Council’s agenda includes vocational education and training, the European Education Area, the Erasmus+ programme, the importance of culture for democratic resilience, the AgoraEU programme, and democracy and transparency in sport. 28.11.2025 | Index adjustments have been made to client fees for early childhood education and care and to the related income thresholds. From the beginning of August 2026, the maximum fee will be EUR 335 and the minimum EUR 32. If there is more than one child in a family, the fee for the family’s second child is at most 40% of the fee for the family’s first child, i.e. a maximum of EUR 134. The fee for the family’s next children is 20% of the fee charged for the youngest child.

23.9.2024 | The Ministry of Education and Culture’s proportion of the 2025 budget proposal is EUR 8.45 billion, which is some EUR 411 million more than in the 2024 Budget. The proposal implements the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government, which aims to invest, even in a difficult economic situation, in raising the level of education and training and improving the conditions for conducting science, research and development.

2.6.2021 | Oulu has been selected as European Capital of Culture for 2026. The selection is recommended by a European expert panel composed of nine independent experts in the field of arts and culture. The panel, having visited the candidate cities, announced its recommendation at the end of its two-day meeting in Helsinki on Wednesday 2 June.

25.1.2024 | Minister of Science and Culture Sari Multala will attend the opening day of the Tartu Capital of Culture year on Friday 26 January. During her visit, the Minister will also meet the Ministers of Culture of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the European Commissioner for Culture.

9.10.2023 | The Ministry of Education and Culture’s proportion of the 2024 budget proposal is EUR 8.0 billion, which is EUR 274 million more than in the 2023 Budget. The budget proposal implements the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government by raising the level of education and competence of the entire population. The measures in the budget proposal aim to strengthen the effectiveness of science and improve the conditions for conducting research and development.

20.5.2021 | The European Capital of Culture for 2026 will be selected in Helsinki at the beginning of June. The cities of Tampere, Oulu, and Savonlinna all qualified in the first round of the competition last summer and are now shortlisted for the final selection. The selection will be made by a nine-member European panel of experts, with five panel members visiting the applicant cities next week.

30.5.2024 | In its meeting on 29 May, the government-appointed parliamentary research, development and innovation (RDI) monitoring group discussed the multiannual plan for the use of research and development funding, which is currently under preparation. The monitoring group highlighted the role of R&D experts and stressed the importance of deepening cooperation and improving effectiveness in R&D activities.
