International higher education students could play an even bigger role in driving Finland’s growth. Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen and Minister of Science and Culture Mari-Leena Talvitie invited businesses, cities, higher education institutions and students to find solutions to improve international students’ employment prospects in Finland.


General upper secondary education in English to commence in August 2026

The Ministry of Education and Culture has granted the first five authorisations to provide general upper secondary education in English. The authorisations were granted to Gradia, Jyväskylä Educational Consortium Gradia, and to the cities of Helsinki, Oulu, Pori and Tampere. This is part of the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government.

Ten artists awarded Finland Prizes

Minister of Science and Culture Mari-Leena Talvitie has presented the Finland Prize in culture to ten artists and organisations, one of which received an honorary diploma.

Tuition fees to be introduced for upper secondary students from non-EU countries – commissioned education to be extended to EU and EEA nationals

Students from non-EU countries will in future be required to pay tuition fees in both general upper secondary education and vocational education and training. These students will therefore no longer be included in the system of central government transfers to local government. At the same time, providers of vocational education and training will be permitted to sell commissioned education leading to a qualification also to citizens of EU Member States and EEA countries. The Government issued a legislative proposal on the matter on Thursday.

Finnish art showcased in New York – Minister Talvitie strengthens partnerships in the United States

Nordic Baltic Youth Summit to bring together 200 young people from different countries in Helsinki

The Nordic Baltic Youth Summit will be held in Finland for the first time. The summit participants will draft policy recommendations addressing challenges related to the green transition and youth employment and submit them to Minister of Youth, Sport and Physical Activity Mika Poutala.
