The Sustainable Growth Programme for Higher Education in Finland seeks solutions through which higher education and research can contribute to the strengthening of the Finnish public economy and fuel sustainable growth.

7.11.2022 | A recent report shows that Finnish higher education institutions still have much work to do in promoting equality for teaching and research staff. Commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the project examined how gender equality, non-discrimination and diversity in higher education communities are realised and promoted in Finnish higher education institutions. The project’s final report was published on Monday 7 November.

28.4.2022 | Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences will open up new study opportunities to help Ukrainians entering the country. Students will be given opportunities to start or continue their studies, and researchers will be offered the opportunity to continue their research work in Finland.

25.8.2022 | The Ministry of Education and Culture has decided to support higher education institutions in their efforts to provide more study opportunities for beneficiaries of temporary protection. The funds will be used to finance the provision of English-language education and to increase preparatory education for higher education for immigrants in universities of applied sciences.

3.2.2021 | The Digivision 2030, a joint project between Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences, will bring greater opportunities for all learners to learn flexibly. The aim is to restructure Finland’s higher education over the next decade by means of digitalisation and to make Finland a model country for flexible learning.

21.12.2022 | Minister of Science and Culture Petri Honkonen has granted nearly four million euros in discretionary funding to develop and increase the availability of cyber security education and boost the research and teaching of information psychology.

4.3.2026 | A new pilot scheme will offer free open university studies to young people who have not been admitted to a higher education institution. The aim of the scheme is to give young people the opportunity to explore different fields of study and to support a faster transition into higher education.

22.12.2021 | The Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare have updated two recommendations related to the prevention of the COVID-19 epidemic. One of the recommendations applies to providers of early childhood education and care and school education, and the second to providers of general upper secondary education and vocational education and training, liberal adult education, basic education for adults, universities of applied sciences and universities.

17.8.2021 | All students have the right to start their studies in a safe way. The goal that we all share is to be able to bring in much more contact teaching in higher education institutions during the autumn term. Interaction between people, both in contact teaching and in students’ leisure activities, improves wellbeing and strengthens the spirit of community. With the pandemic still ongoing, it has become particularly important to improve both student wellbeing and the ability to study.

21.1.2021 | The generic skills, also known as general skills, of nearly 60% of students in higher education were at most at a satisfactory level and about 40% at least at a good level. These are the results of the final report by the Finnish Institute for Educational Research of the University of Jyväskylä and the Kappas! project of the Centre for University Teaching and Learning of Helsinki University.

4.8.2020 | The Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare have updated the instructions related to the coronavirus epidemic they issued to education providers and educational institutions in the spring. The most important thing is, also from now on, to prevent infections, ensure good hygiene, avoid unnecessary close contacts, and arrange teaching premises more spaciously than usual.

15.2.2017 | A working group at the Ministry of Education and Culture proposes over 40 new measures to respond to the education needs created by the growth in the number of asylum seekers and immigrants. 7.3.2012 | According to Statistics Finland, the majority of recent graduates found employment more easily in 2010 than one year earlier. There were differences in the transition to working life by field of education. Finding employment was most difficult for those graduating from the field of culture. The transition was smoothest for attainers of qualifications in the fields of safety and security, welfare, health and sport.

8.9.2014 | The OECD published its annual indicators on education (Education at a Glance). It compares different OECD countries and partner countries in the light of educational levels, employment by educational attainment, the financial cost of education, enrolment in education and indicators relating to teachers. The publication also analyses the results of international assessments, such as the student performance survey (PISA survey) and the study of adult competencies (PIAAC).

5.6.2013 | Juuli, a publications portal launched in early June is a comprehensive source for bibliographic references of Finnish universities’ domestic and international publications. The portal also provides tools for scanning and searching citations.

15.2.2012 | The administration of education and science policy in the Ministry of Education and Culture has been reorganised. General education and vocational education and training now form the Department for Education Policy, and higher education and science policy come under the Department for Higher Education and Science Policy.
