18.6.2025 | Senate Properties will begin a major renovation of the National Archives’ main building at Rauhankatu 17 in spring 2026. At the same time, the building will be adapted into a shared workspace for the National Archives, the Institute for the Languages of Finland, the Finnish National Agency for Education, the Accessibility Library Celia, and the Research Council of Finland. 21.11.2017 | Young people in Finland ranked in fifth place among the OECD countries that took part in the OECD’s PISA 2015 assessment on collaborative problem solving and in seventh place among all the countries and economies that participated in the assessment. This is the first time that collaborative problem-solving skills were assessed.

13.12.2017 | Professor, Vice Rector Riitta Pyykkö submitted a report on the current state and development needs of Finland’s language reserve to Minister of Education Sanni Grahn-Laasonen on 13 December. The report, drawn up by Professor Pyykkö, covers the entire Finnish education system and proposes an array of measures that should be taken to develop Finnish people’s language skills so that they would meet the future needs.

6.12.2016 | The focus in the OECD’s PISA 2015 Programme for International Student Assessment was on scientific literacy. In the triennial survey, Finnish 15-year-olds ranked in third place among the OECD countries in scientific literacy. Finnish students were still among the best in reading literacy, and mathematical literacy has remained unchanged. There is a lack of enthusiasm for science, however, and this is reflected in a drop in score points.

26.9.2018 | The Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs are working together to increase the visibility of Finnish competence at four destinations abroad. The first counselors of Finnish education and research, or Team Finland Knowledge experts, have been appointed to Buenos Aires, Beijing, Singapore and Washington.

9.5.2018 | Minister of Education and Culture Sanni Grahn-Laasonen has been invited to join the Young Global Leaders network of the World Economic Forum WEF. People who have been involved in the network include the President of France Emmanuel Macron, the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, and the founders of Google Larry Page and Sergei Brin. The last Finn invited to the network before this is Ilkka Paananen, CEO of Supercell video game company.

23.5.2018 | The Agreement on Enhancing International Arctic Scientific Cooperation, concluded between the Arctic Council Member States, entered into force on Wednesday, 23 May 2018. The Agreement aims to enhance the practical scientific research cooperation among the Arctic States. Finnish higher education institutions and research institutes have a strong tradition and a lot of international cooperation in the field of Arctic research. Finland holds the Chairmanship of the Arctic Council until 2019.

26.6.2017 | The EU’s Erasmus+ programmes national mid-term evaluation is completed. This is a mid-term evaluation report concerning the implementation of the programme in Finland. The European Commission and the Member States are required to submit such a report halfway through the programme period. The Erasmus+ programme period covers the years 2014–2020.

23.5.2018 | Finland has been selected to host the next international summit of education ministers and teacher organisations in spring 2019. The International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) is organised once a year jointly by the OECD, the global union federation of teacher organisations Education International, and the selected host country.

2.3.2018 | The Ministry of Education and Culture will hold a seminar on the development of school day by increasing the supply of after-school recreational activities (extended education) on 13 March 2018. The keynote speakers will be Professor Gil G. Noam from Harvard University (USA) and Professor Sang Hoon Bae from Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea).

28.6.2017 | A new flexible training model is proposed for immigrants. The training could be provided by adult education centres, folk high schools, learning centres and summer universities. The proposal was drawn up by a working group in the Ministry of Education and Culture.

31.10.2017 | The Minister of Education and Culture has set a National Literacy Forum to challenge the declining literacy and people’s willingness to read The Forum is tasked to draft guidelines to develop children’s literacy and interest in reading. The Forum gathers experts on literacy and other parties involved with the issue. An appropriation of one million euros is granted to the Literacy Forum.

15.2.2017 | A working group at the Ministry of Education and Culture proposes over 40 new measures to respond to the education needs created by the growth in the number of asylum seekers and immigrants. The final report of the working group was submitted to Minister of Education and Culture Sanni Grahn-Laasonen.

6.6.2017 | Professor Christina Salmivalli of the University of Turku is the winner of the Finnish Science Award 2017. The award is granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture. It was presented by Minister of Education Sanni Grahn-Laasonen during the Science Forum in Turku on Tuesday 6th of June.
