The total number of students in education leading to a qualification or degree was 1.25 million in 2011. Preliminary data on 2011 indicate that the number of students remained unchanged in comparison with the previous year.

The number of students decreased in comprehensive school and upper secondary general school education, but increased in vocational and polytechnic education. No significant changes took place in university education.

In 2010 the number of new students totalled 271,000 and that of attainers of qualifications or degrees 216,000. A total of 52 per cent of new students and 54 per cent of attainers of qualifications or degrees were women.

These data derive from the education statistics compiled by Statistics Finland. Statistics Finland compiles statistics on post-comprehensive school education leading to a qualification or degree, which draw an overall picture of the students and attained qualifications in education leading to a qualification or degree. All post-comprehensive educational sectors (upper secondary general, vocational, polytechnic, university) are covered by these statistics with harmonised concepts and classifications.
