Haatainen: The themes of the Finnish presidency will be quality and equality in education
Minister Tuula Haatainen and Commissioner Ján Figel', who is responsible for education in the European Union, discussed matters relating to the Finnish Presidency. Commissioner Figel' is on visit to Finland on 25 and 26 May to follow the WorldSkills competition in Helsinki.
According to Minister Haatainen, the main aim in the education sector during the Finnish Presidency (2006) will be to promote the Lisbon Strategy.
- Lifelong learning and quality, equality and cost-effectiveness in education, as well as the utilisation of R&D and innovation, are key factors in the promotion of the Lisbon Strategy. Finland will seek to promote discussion on these matters during its Presidency.
Minister Haatainen also noted that, as part of the implementation of the Lisbon goals, the creation of the European Higher Education and Research Area and the development of vocational education will be to the fore during the Finnish Presidency.
- In December 2006 Finland will host the follow-up meeting to the Copenhagen Process for enhancing cooperation in vocational education and training in Europe, said Minister Haatainen.
