Press release -

HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, Chairman of the International Council of the International Award Association, and Mrs Tanja Karpela, Minister of Culture, presented International Awards for Young People to 60 young Finns at the Government Banquet Hall, Helsinki. They conferred forty-seven Bronze Awards, ten Silver Awards and three Gold Awards.

Two Finnish award recipients (one Bronze and one Gold Award) will receive their awards later in Petrozavodsk during a visit by HRH Prince Edward to the Republic of Karelia on 14-17 of September.

The International Award for Young People is a global self-development programme. The aim is to encourage 14-to-25-year-olds to engage in beneficial hobbies, gain enjoyable experiences and acquire knowledge and social skills. Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and Expeditions are the key words in the International Award family. There are three separate attainment levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The Award offers young people the chance to set and achieve personal goals, to learn about themselves and their community. Along the way, they gain qualities like responsibility, trust, and planning and organisation skills. There is no competition between participants, The Award is purely a personal challenge and young people only compete against themselves. Self-motivation is at the core of the Programme. There are no externally set standards to achieve. The criterion for the Award is individual improvement measured against the participant's starting point and potential.

Award Leaders monitor each participant's programme, and progress is logged in a record book. In the evaluation, focus is on the participant's development, ability to get along with other people, the quality of the hobby and regular attendance.
