UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education to visit Finland
The United Nation’s independent Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education Farida Shaheed will visit Finland on 20–29 November. This is the first country visit to the Nordic countries under the mandate of the Special Rapporteur established in 1998. The aim of the visit is to assess how educational rights are observed in Finland.
During her visit, the Special Rapporteur will focus on the equality of the Finnish education system as well as on teacher training and practices to support learning. She will meet Minister of Education Anna-Maja Henriksson and authorities, representatives of civil society and other stakeholders. The Special Rapporteur will visit educational institutions and travel to Turku and Åland in addition to Helsinki.
The mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education is part of the independent Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council, which Finland strongly supports. Special procedure mandate-holders report and issue recommendations to the Human Rights Council and the government in question.
Special Rapporteur Shaheed will present the report and recommendations concerning Finland to the Human Rights Council at the 2024 summer session, where Finland will participate in the interactive dialogue.
