Based on the financial obligation for media service providers enabled by Directive (EU) 2018/1808 on audiovisual media services, a government proposal is being prepared to implement the obligation in Finland.

4.3.2026 | A new pilot scheme will offer free open university studies to young people who have not been admitted to a higher education institution. The aim of the scheme is to give young people the opportunity to explore different fields of study and to support a faster transition into higher education.

9.10.2025 | Students from non-EU countries will in future be required to pay tuition fees in both general upper secondary education and vocational education and training. These students will therefore no longer be included in the system of central government transfers to local government. At the same time, providers of vocational education and training will be permitted to sell commissioned education leading to a qualification also to citizens of EU Member States and EEA countries.

13.6.2024 | The multiannual plan for the use of central government research and development funding focuses on strengthening cooperation between businesses and other R&D actors and encouraging businesses to step up their R&D activities in Finland. The plan also aims to improve the conditions for ambitious research that produces new skills and knowledge, to strengthen research and technology infrastructures and to promote international R&D cooperation.

The subgroups for copyright infrastructure meet in different configurations including workshops to discuss topical issues related to practices on identifiers in the creative field, metadata, technology and infrastructure development, and legal issues linked to data and IP. A draft roadmap has been developed during year 2021. In 2022 focus on NFT's, data protection and EDICs (European Digital Infrastructure Consortium).

30.5.2024 | In its meeting on 29 May, the government-appointed parliamentary research, development and innovation (RDI) monitoring group discussed the multiannual plan for the use of research and development funding, which is currently under preparation. The monitoring group highlighted the role of R&D experts and stressed the importance of deepening cooperation and improving effectiveness in R&D activities.

10.10.2024 | Central government is prepared to provide capital funding totalling EUR 58 million this year and next year to the Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design. The return on capital will enable the work of a world-class museum in a new building in Helsinki. The Government proposal on the recapitalisation of the Foundation for the Museum is included in the third supplementary budget proposal for 2024 submitted to Parliament.

9.11.2023 | Minister of Science and Culture Sari Multala has launched a report on cultural policy. The preparatory work will be carried out with broad-based involvement of the cultural sector. The report is included in the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government. The Government aims to submit the report to Parliament in autumn 2024.

3.11.2023 | Tohtorikoulutuspilotin hakuilmoitukset on julkaistu Suomen Akatemian verkkosivuilla. Tohtorikoulutuspilotti 2024–2027 on opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriön rahoittama ja yliopistojen toteuttama tutkijankoulutuksen laajennus, jossa rahoitetaan yhteensä enintään 1000 uutta määräaikaista väitöskirjatutkijan työsuhdetta yliopistoissa ja niihin liittyviä ohjauskuluja.
