An EU conference on information society content and the online market

During the Finnish EU Presidency, the Ministry of Education will organise an expert conference on online content and copyright. Titled creativity.online.fi – European Content and Copyright Policy, the conference takes place in Helsinki on 13–14 July 2006. The themes of the conference include the new market, distribution and uses of films, television programmes and music, and the related technological, financial, legislative and political issues. The conference is connected to the Lisbon and i2010 Strategies, and it will be opened by Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, with the closing words given by Minister of Culture Tanja Saarela and Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media.

Other speakers include David Kosse, President of Universal Pictures International, Arne Wessberg, President of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Jaakko Rauramo, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the SanomaWSOY Group, Odile Quintin, Director General of DG Employment and Social Policy, James Lancaster, Acting Director of Rights and Business Affairs of the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) and Rita Hayes, Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

The two-day conference will be held at the Marina Congress Center, with approximately 350 Finnish and international participants. They represent areas such as the film and music industry, the audiovisual content production industry, teleoperators, the technological industry, Internet service providers, copyright organisations, publishers, financiers of the field, experts, EU Member State ministries and the European Commission.

The conference is a continuation of similar meetings organised during the British and Austrian Presidencies on content production and competitiveness. The aim is to intensify the policy now being created in the EU on online content and creative industries. The conference will be organised in co-operation with the European Commission.
