9.5.2023 | This year (9 May 2023–8 May 2024) has been designated as the European Year of Skills. The aim is to encourage working-age people to identify and develop their skills and to help companies find solutions for recruiting skilled labour.

11.3.2025 | The working group on responsible international cooperation set up by the Ministry of Education and Culture has published recommendations that emphasise openness, reciprocity and risk management in international cooperation in higher education and research. The recommendations aim to safeguard academic freedom while also ensuring that international cooperation upholds democracy and ethical choices.

22.11.2024 | As part of the legislative reform of basic education in the arts, the Ministry of Education and Culture has charted the experiences of children and young people participating in basic education in the arts when engaging in the arts as a recreational activity. Children and young people must be consulted in all legislative drafting concerning them. The consultation was conducted using an open online survey.

13.12.2021 | In its new report, the Parliamentary Working Group on Research, Development and Innovation proposes introducing a legislative act on the financing of research and development and drawing up a statutory plan for R&D funding that would extend beyond the spending limits period. The working group also proposes introducing a permanent and more extensive tax incentive for research and development activities.

19.10.2023 | The Government has appointed Sirkku Linna as Director General at the Ministry of Education and Culture for a fixed-term public-service relationship between 1 December 2023 and 30 November 2028. She will head the Department for Higher Education and Science Policy at the Ministry.

7.2.2024 | The Ministry of Education and Culture will allocate EUR 255 million to universities for piloting new practices in doctoral education in 2024–2027. This additional funding will be allocated to 1,000 doctoral researchers who will have a three-year employment contract to complete their doctoral degree.

13.4.2022 | The Government proposes amendments to the Copyright Act and the Act on Electronic Communication Services. The legislative amendments bring the provisions of Finnish legislation in line with the European Union's Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market and the Directive on online transmissions of broadcasting organisations. The transposition of these directives is the most significant reform of national copyright legislation in two decades.

28.6.2023 | The Ministry of Education and Culture has drawn up an action plan to promote diversity in the arts and culture. The action plan is based on the final report which a working group appointed by the Ministry published in 2021. The action plan aims to take into account the diversity of the Finnish population in all planning and decision-making in the arts and cultural policy.

27.9.2021 | The Ministry of Education and Culture is requesting comments on a proposed bill to implement the provisions of the EU DSM Directive and Online Broadcasting Directive as part of Finnish law.  Implementing the directives requires significant changes to the Copyright Act. The request for comments is published in the Lausuntopalvelu.fi service. The deadline for submitting comments is 31 October 2021.

5.6.2023 | The responsibility for awarding government grants for sport science research will transfer from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture to the Academy of Finland. The amendment to Act on the Promotion of Sports and Physical Activity, which entered into force in February 2023, will simplify the application and review process by making it entirely the responsibility of a single organisation. To this end, the Academy of Finland will launch a new Academy Programme for sport science.
