9.6.2020 | The Ministry of Education and Culture is launching a three-year programme for assessing the quality and equality of vocational education and training. Over EUR 270 million has been allocated for 2020–2022 for improving learning opportunities and outcomes, increasing wellbeing and a sense of community, supporting education providers to reform their procedures and practices, and strengthening the capacity of education providers to respond to changes in their operating environment.

13.9.2007 | A budget of EUR 6,888.9 million has been proposed for the sector of the Ministry of Education in the draft State budget, an increase of EUR 324.6 million over the current year. The year 2008 will be devoted to improving the quality of basic education and expanding vocational education. An increase in the operating budgets of universities is a key element in the emphasis on competencies. Improvements will be made in student financial aid in accordance with the Government programme.

7.5.2020 | The results of the PISA 2018 financial literacy assessments were published in 20 countries on 7 May 2020. With their average score of 537 points for the financial literacy assessment, Finnish young people were the second best together with Canada (532 points). The most financially literate youth were found in Estonia, where the average of 547 points was statistically significantly higher than the average of all other countries.

24.4.2017 | Vocational education and training (VET) will undergo a comprehensive reform. The Government submitted a proposal for a new act on vocational education and training to the Parliament on 24 April.

26.2.2021 | A study on the effects of diminished proceeds from gambling activities has been completed. The study examines four options for developing the Finnish gambling system. The working group sets as its primary option a comprehensive overhaul that would place gambling proceeds within the scope of universal coverage in central government revenue and existing beneficiaries would be under the spending limits procedure. The report was published on 26 February.

3.9.2019 | Minister of Science and Culture Hanna Kosonen has appointed the Central Arts Council for the term 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2022. Author Juha Itkonen was appointed as Chair of the Council.

4.7.2019 | This culture conference will discuss the future of the EU from the perspectives of culture, creativity, democracy, education and changing politics. It will consider the key role culture plays in sustainable development and inspire debate on why creativity and cultural engagement should be cherished more in the EU and how this could be accomplished.

12.5.2020 | The Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare have issued instructions that allow the return to early childhood education and contact teaching, taking care of safety and reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection. The latest instructions concern general upper secondary education, vocational education and training, universities, universities of applied sciences and liberal education.
