21.6.2006 | Active citizenship, democracy education and topics such as the challenges presented by the openness of the EU youth policy will be discussed in the Young Active Citizenships – EU Meeting in Hyvinkää on 1–4 July 2006. The meeting promoting the active citizenship of young people is organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Finnish Youth Research Network, the Finnish Youth Co-operation – Allianssi, and the City of Helsinki Youth Department.

9.11.2006 | The Education, Youth and Culture Council (EYC) will convene in Brussels on 13–14 November. The meeting will be chaired by the Finnish Minister of Education Antti Kalliomäki (education matters) and the Finnish Minister of Culture Tanja Saarela (cultural, audiovisual and youth matters).

8.6.2006 | The opening of the European Chemicals Agency in Finland in 2007 and the increase in the number of international personnel and return migrants mean that international education will have to be developed in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. For a few years, the educational needs can be met with the current provision, but after that the range of curricula, programmes and languages will have to be developed both quantitatively and qualitatively.

9.5.2007 | The 2007 Finnish Science Prize was awarded to Academy Professor Ilkka Hanski. Academy Professor Hanski works at the University of Helsinki, where he directs the Centre of Excellence in Metapopulation Research. Minister of Education and Science Sari Sarkomaa presented the prize, worth €85,000, at a Science Forum organised by the Ministry of Education and the Academy of Finland on Wednesday.

27.9.2021 | The Ministry of Education and Culture is requesting comments on a proposed bill to implement the provisions of the EU DSM Directive and Online Broadcasting Directive as part of Finnish law.  Implementing the directives requires significant changes to the Copyright Act. The request for comments is published in the Lausuntopalvelu.fi service. The deadline for submitting comments is 31 October 2021.

17.11.2020 | Four new competence clusters have been added to the Academy of Finland’s Flagship Programme. The Flagship Programme’s third call focused on collaboration between research teams and the business sector, and also on high-quality research with impact and the capacity for renewal. The Finnish Flagship decisions are part of the implementation of the new flexible partnership model of the Government’s RDI roadmap.

24.9.2020 | The Government proposes to enact a law on the promotion of performing arts that would replace the current Theatres and Orchestras Act. The name and scope of the new Act would be more general than the current Theatres and Orchestras Act and would cover all forms of performing arts, and access to the system of central government transfers would not be restricted to certain forms of performing arts. The Government submitted the proposal to Parliament on Thursday, 11 June 2020.

2.12.2013 | Average mathematical literacy among Finnish school students ranked in twelfth place among the 65 participating countries in the PISA 2012 assessment. In 2003, when mathematics was previously the focus of study, Finland came in second place. The national average score in mathematics has decreased significantly since the 2003 assessment. Reading and science literacy have also deteriorated markedly.
