Restrictions on early childhood education and care, primary and secondary education and vocational education and training extended until 13 May - OKM - Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland

6.4.2020 | The Government will continue to impose restrictions on contact teaching at all levels of education. This means that the exceptional arrangements for education will be extended until 13 May. Teaching will continue to be organised in alternative ways by means of distance learning and other similar arrangements. The Government still recommends that children in early childhood education and care, pre-primary education and in years 1 to 3 of comprehensive school education stay at home, if possible.

13.12.2017 | Professor, Vice Rector Riitta Pyykkö submitted a report on the current state and development needs of Finland’s language reserve to Minister of Education Sanni Grahn-Laasonen on 13 December. The report, drawn up by Professor Pyykkö, covers the entire Finnish education system and proposes an array of measures that should be taken to develop Finnish people’s language skills so that they would meet the future needs.

7.10.2019 | A budget of EUR 6.8 billion is proposed for the Ministry of Education and Culture’s administrative branch for 2020. The draft budget measures seek to increase the skills level in Finland, make education more equitable, improve the quality of education and enhance the wellbeing of children and young people. Financing for the arts and culture will support creative work and production and promote equal access to the arts and culture.

17.9.2019 | The Government will invest in knowledge and education with a financing package of approximately EUR 350 million for all levels of education. This investment will raise the level of skills and competence in Finland, make education more equitable and improve its quality, and enhance the wellbeing of children and young people. The Government agreed on the content of the budget proposal for 2020 in a budget session on Tuesday 17 September.

Finnish State Award for Foreign Translators goes to Kirsi Kinnunen - OKM - Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland

25.5.2021 | Kirsi Kinnunen, a translator of Finnish graphic novels and other works into French, has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Finnish State Award for Foreign Translators. The award includes a cash prize of €15,000. Kinnunen received her award on Tuesday 25 May from Finland’s Minister of Science and Culture Annika Saarikko.

27.9.2021 | The Government submitted its budget proposal for 2022 to Parliament on 27 September. The proposed appropriations for the administrative branch of the Ministry of Education and Culture total EUR 7.41 million. Next year’s budget will continue to focus on improving quality and equity in education and on safeguarding funding for science and research. Funds will also be allocated for rebuilding the cultural sector in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Forum gathers experts on literacy and other parties involved with the issue. An appropriation of one million euros is granted to the Literacy Forum.

Lower fees in early childhood education and care fees – boosting employment and easing daily life for families - OKM - Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland

28.9.2020 | Lower fees in early childhood education and care will increase employment and raise the participation rate in early childhood education and care. The first steps in the preparations for the Government proposal to reduce early childhood education and care (ECEC) fees are to raise the income thresholds by 31%. At the same time, the maximum fee for a family’s second child in ECEC will be reduced from 50% to 40%.

15.3.2019 | As the first ever Nordic country, Finland hosted the International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) on 14 and 15 March 2019. The Summit brought delegations of ministers and deputy ministers from 21 countries across the world to Finland. Minister of Education and Culture Sanni Grahn-Laasonen and President of the Trade Union of Education Olli Luukkainen led the Finnish delegation. Early childhood education and care was included in the Summit’s key themes, also for the first time.

It examines areas such as the level of education, participation in education, education and training costs, the provision of education and training, and the number and employment levels of higher education graduates in the 36 OECD member countries and some partner countries.

28.4.2017 | The government has on 28 April 2017 agreed on the general government finance plan for 2018-2021. The level of the allocated appropriation for the Ministry of Education and Culture is 6.3 billion euros in 2021. Additional 340 million euros will be allocated to know-how, of which 200 million will come from the budget and 140 million for education and research will be allocated as capitalisation.

Scam alert: fraudulent letter sent in the name of the Ministry of Education and Culture - OKM - Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland

6.8.2018 | The Ministry of Education and Culture has become aware that a fraudulent letter or letters have been sent in its name. In the letter, the recipient is requested to contact the Ministry to book an appointment for an interview for the purposes of determining the "knowledge of cultural traditions" of the recipient's minor children. The Ministry of Education and Culture does not commission or conduct interviews like this, and the Ministry is not the sender of the letters.

Activity ePass to be introduced for young people in grades 7–9 - OKM - Ministry of Education and Culture, Finland

23.5.2018 | The Ministry of Education and Culture has launched a project where a new, nationwide Activity ePass intended for all young people in grades 7–9 will be designed. The objective is that young people could already next year download the new mobile application and start using the ePass with their own smartphones.
