23.11.2017 | The Ministry of Education and Culture has decided to enter 52 elements in the National Inventory of Living Heritage. The National Inventory will be supplemented at regular intervals, and it will be opened for new proposals in 2019 at the earliest. It is later possible for the elements listed in the National Inventory of Living Heritage to be nominated for inscription on UNESCO’s international lists of intangible cultural heritage.

8.12.2015 | The Minister of Education and Culture Sanni Grahn-Laasonen awarded the Finland Prize to seven artists who have shown exceptional accomplishment. Among this year’s prize recipients were Finnish contemporary classical music composer Aulis Sallinen and actress Birgitta Ulfsson. Other prize winners were artist Adel Abibin, author and film director Hassan Blasim, author Nura Farah, choreographer Kenneth Greve and Espoo City Library Entresse.

12.10.2017 | In its resolution of 12 October, the Government outlined measures to be taken to promote young people’s growth and living conditions during the remainder of the government term. The National Youth Work and Youth Policy Programme is a cross-sectoral programme drawn up under the new Youth Act. The programme will be adopted as a government resolution every four years. As the Youth Act was amended during the current government term, the first programme now adopted covers only the period 2017–2019.

The policies are based on changes in the operating environment brought about by digital technology, the objectives of the Government Programme and the development of appropriations for culture.

10.10.2013 | Finland has been chosen as the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair next year. A press conference on next year's programme was held at this year's Book Fair on Thursday 10 October. Paavo Arhinmäki, the Minister of Culture and Sport, opened the occasion. Finland's slogan as the Guest of Honour of the Book Fair in 2014 is FINNLAND. COOL.

13.9.2007 | On Thursday 13 September 2007, the Finnish Government submitted its proposal for the establishment of European Schooling in Helsinki. It would be a state school comprising a two-year pre-primary school, a five-year primary school and a seven-year secondary school. The European Schooling is projected to start in August 2008. The President of the Republic is also expected to submit her proposal concerning it to Parliament on Thursday.

8.6.2006 | The opening of the European Chemicals Agency in Finland in 2007 and the increase in the number of international personnel and return migrants mean that international education will have to be developed in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. For a few years, the educational needs can be met with the current provision, but after that the range of curricula, programmes and languages will have to be developed both quantitatively and qualitatively.

In addition to the 20 Ministers of Education, Council of Europe Secretary-General Thorbjørn Jagland is also in attendance. The keynote speakers are Speaker of the Parliament Eero Heinäluoma and European Commissioner for Education, Androulla Vassiliou.

18.9.2007 | The latest edition of Education at a Glance, an annual indicator report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), was published on Tuesday 18 September. The report shows that Finns in the age group 15–19 are actively taking part in education. About 90 per cent of the age group studies full-time or part-time.

18.11.2008 | The Ministry of Education launched talks last august in order to promote electronic commerce in creative contents and to reduce illicit file sharing over the internet. The parties to these branch talks represented the film, music and games industries, internet service providers, content business companies, and authorities.

23.9.2005 | Antti Kalliomäki (SDP), Member of Parliament, teacher (Physical Education), was appointed Minister of Education and Science in Matti Vanhanen's Government at the presidential session on Friday. He will transfer from the post of Minister of Finance, while the current Minister of Education and Science Tuula Haatainen will transfer to the position of Minister of Social Affairs and Health.

21.6.2006 | Active citizenship, democracy education and topics such as the challenges presented by the openness of the EU youth policy will be discussed in the Young Active Citizenships – EU Meeting in Hyvinkää on 1–4 July 2006. The meeting promoting the active citizenship of young people is organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Finnish Youth Research Network, the Finnish Youth Co-operation – Allianssi, and the City of Helsinki Youth Department.

13.9.2007 | A budget of EUR 6,888.9 million has been proposed for the sector of the Ministry of Education in the draft State budget, an increase of EUR 324.6 million over the current year. The year 2008 will be devoted to improving the quality of basic education and expanding vocational education. An increase in the operating budgets of universities is a key element in the emphasis on competencies. Improvements will be made in student financial aid in accordance with the Government programme.
