Universities receive additional funding for training a thousand new doctoral graduates
The Ministry of Education and Culture will allocate EUR 255 million to universities for piloting new practices in doctoral education in 2024–2027. This additional funding will be allocated to 1,000 doctoral researchers who will have a three-year employment contract to complete their doctoral degree.
PISA 2022: Performance fell both in Finland and in nearly all other OECD countries
Findings of the OECD’s PISA 2022 (Programme for International Student Assessment) show that while the performance of Finnish young people has deteriorated, it remains above the OECD average. PISA 2022 focused on mathematical literacy.
Ministry begins to draft a cultural policy report
Minister of Science and Culture Sari Multala has launched a report on cultural policy. The preparatory work will be carried out with broad-based involvement of the cultural sector. The report is included in the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government. The Government aims to submit the report to Parliament in autumn 2024.
Living epic Kalevala receives European Heritage Label
The Kalevala, the national epic of Finland, was awarded the European Commission’s European Heritage Label on 11 April 2024. The European Heritage Label is granted to sites, monuments, documents or events that have a particular significance for European history, culture and integration. The label was now granted to seven applicants.
Finnish State Award for Foreign Translators to Maima Grīnberga
This year, the recipient of the Finnish State Award for Foreign Translators is Maima Grīnberga (b. 1969), who has been translating Finnish literature into Latvian with distinction. The prize, which has been awarded since 1975, is worth EUR 15,000. The Ministry of Education and Culture awards the prize annually based on a proposal by the Finnish Literature Exchange (FILI).
